December 1, 2013
Over the past years, memory foam mattresses have emerged as the most popular mattresses in the market. They are ideal for all people and especially those suffering from back problems and sleep disorders. Memory foam offers a number of advantages the greatest being the ability by the user to relax thus being able to rest properly when asleep.
While there are many benefits associated with memory foam mattresses, proper maintenance should be provided as a way of enhancing their durability while at the same time ensuring that you enjoy uninterrupted sleep all the time. Below are some memory foam mattress maintenance tips to consider:
Vacuum your mattress regularly
Vacuuming your memory foam mattress regularly will help prevent dirt and lint build-up thus ensuring it is fresh and healthy. You should do this using a high powered vacuum cleaner and always ensure that the brush is clean as a dirty brush can easily transfer lint and dirt particles to the mattress.
Have a suitable support system for the mattress
Normally, memory foam mattresses do not have internal support composition as they are meant to provide soft relaxation atmosphere for the users. You should however ensure that your mattress is placed on a sturdy platform which should work as a support system thus preventing cases of dipping at the center and sagging. To achieve this, you should look for a high-quality platform or box spring to protect the cushion while at the same time giving some more needed height to the bed. Box springs can be purchased along with you memory foam mattress and in case you settle for a platform, make sure that the slats are ½ an inch apart for proper air circulation. Failure to do this will result to temperature problems which are common with memory foam mattresses.
Air your mattress regularly
Airing your memory foam regularly is important in ensuring that it does not develop an unpleasant odor which could be caused by body fluids such as sweat. Both new and used mattresses should be aired out for at least one hour and especially after changing the covers. You should also consider sprinkling the mattress with baking soda in case it develops some smell and allow the solution to sit for one hour or so before vacuuming it.
Always use the right cleaning methods
In case some stains develop in the cushion and have to be cleaned, using the right cleaning agents and methods is important. Only use baking soda pastes or dampen (do not saturate) a sponge in soapy water to scrub stains from your mattress. Do not pour water on the mattress or used a wet sponge on the same. It is advisable to avoid the use of any cleaning fluids during your regular cleaning and instead rely on a vacuum cleaner. Once you have cleaned your mattress, leave it outside under a shade or leaning on the wall to dry. Never cover the mattress before you are sure it has dried completely.
Turn your mattress occasionally
This is yet another memory foam mattress maintenance tip to consider. In order to have an evenly distributed wear and tear, your mattress should be turned periodically thus allowing you to sleep on different parts of the cushion. This should be done after every few weeks or months depending with the rate in which you use the mattress.
